From Mediterranean Shores to Northern Horizons

From the sun-drenched, ancient coastlines of the Mediterranean — where olive trees meet azure waters as they have for millennia — Pytheas of Massalia began his legendary voyage into the unknown.
His journey carried him across treacherous seas to the dramatic northern shores, where the stark beauty of Iceland’s coast and the symbolic Viking ship sculpture of Reykjavík’s Sólfar remind us of the courage required for such an expedition.

The Pytheas Project follows in the wake of a legendary voyage — not only across geographical space, but through time and imagination. Inspired by Pytheas’s journey between the Mediterranean and the far North, we seek to connect diverse cultures through a shared curiosity about the world and its stories.

Today, the Pytheas Project is retracing this extraordinary path — from the ancient Greek colony of Pharos (now Stari Grad), founded in 385 BCE (just decades before Pytheas’s own era), to the northern reaches of Europe, where ancient seafaring legacy meets modern cultural symbolism.
